Programming for the Web

Developing a web site can require a variety of skills. A graphic artist to create the images, a writer to provide the words and content, a web designer to provide the overall page design and layout, and a programmer to provide dynamic or interactive features.

Sometimes all of these skills can be found in a single person. More often, a minumum of two people are required, a designer and programmer. That's where I come into the picture.

More and more web sites are adding features that require some programming. Some examples are: forms to collect email addresses for email lists or newsletter mailings, simple feedback forms to allow your visitors to send comments or questions to the web site owner, or completely dynamic sites where all the pages are generated.

My skill set includes working with Perl, the traditional programming language for the web. and PHP, a newer language that was created specifically for the web. Both Perl and PHP allow rapid programming, or scripting. The development time needed for Perl and PHP is much shorter than that for other languages like Java or C/C++.
